Royal BC Museum celebrates International Astronomy Day

Release

VICTORIA, BC — This Saturday, May 7, the Royal BC Museum is celebrating Astronomy Day 2022 and the kick off of the national Science Odyssey campaign with free family-friendly activities and special screenings at IMAX® Victoria.

“After a two-year hiatus, we are thrilled to once again host our annual Astronomy Day event,“ said Kim Gough, Learning Program Developer at the Royal BC Museum. “This year is especially exciting as Astronomy Day marks the first day of the Science Odyssey campaign, a true celebration of Canadian achievements in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Perhaps surprisingly to some, Victoria has had a role in building Canada’s international reputation in astronomy since 1918.”

Volunteers from the Victoria Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Science Venture staff from the University of Victoria, and others will be on hand to present amazing astronomical activities for all ages, including solar telescopes for safely viewing the sun, astrophotography, historical displays, astro arts and crafts, and lecture presentations on astronomy.

Lecture presentations will run throughout the day in the Newcombe Auditorium:

  • 10:30 am — Tracking the Moon for 30 Years — Randy Enkin, President, RASC Victoria Centre
  • 11:30 am — Observing the Birth of Planets in the Universe — Ruobing Dong, Physics & Astronomy, University of Victoria
  • 12:30 pm — Cosmic Collisions and the Fate of the Milky Way — Mallory Thorp, Physics & Astronomy, University of Victoria
  • 1:30 pm — Demystifying Machine Learning — Karun Thanjavur, Physics & Astronomy, University of Victoria

Also, learn more about asteroids, where they come from, and the risk they pose to our planet with two special screenings of Asteroid Hunters. A fan favourite, Asteroid Hunters will screen at IMAX® Victoria at 12 and 3 pm, Saturday only. Regular IMAX admission charges apply.

Science Odyssey events will be held across the country from May 7 to 22. Learn more about what’s happening in your community here.
