October 27 has been declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
This year’s slogan, “Archives at Risk: Much more to do” perfectly highlights the Royal BC Museum’s ongoing commitment to preserve some of our most fragile audiovisual documents through digitization.
One of the most exciting projects is the digitization of episodes of the quintessential Vancouver-based current affairs show Webster!, featuring iconic British Columbian journalist and broadcaster, “Mr. Precisely” himself, Jack Webster.
The generous donation of more than 2,000 individual video cassette tapes in 1987 by Webster and BCTV has allowed this popular broadcaster to expand his legacy into the digital age.
Please enjoy the following seven excerpts from Webster! live broadcasts; including a story in response to the International Council of Archives (ICA) 1979 call to celebrate Archives with a visit to the British Columbia Provincial Archives (BC Archives).
To celebrate International Archives Week in November 1979 Webster speaks with Pierre Berton about the importance of archives and Webster’s team visits our own BC Archives.
Jack Webster, a veteran journalist with a reputation for being both tough and fair, was a pioneer of talk radio and television during his 25-year career. His groundbreaking show Webster! premiered in 1978 “at 9 am precisely!,” as he was famous for saying, and featured interviews with politicians, labour leaders, prominent business people, authors, academics and entertainers until Webster’s retirement in 1987.
