Kudos for Royal BC Museum Books

It is award season in the publishing world and, as the announcements start rolling out, Royal BC Museum publications are receiving wonderful recognition here in BC and across the country.

March 17: The Alcuin Society announced the winners of its 36th annual competition, The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, and we are thrilled to see designer Lara Minja receive second prize in the Prose Illustrated category for The Language of Family: Stories of Bonds and Belonging, edited by Michelle van der Merwe. The winning titles will be entered in the international book design competition in Leipzig, Germany in February 2019 and exhibited worldwide: in Germany at the Frankfurt and Leipzig Book Fairs; in Japan, at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, in conjunction with the Tokyo International Book Fair; and in almost every province of Canada.

March 6: UBC Library and the Pacific BookWorld News Society announced the 2018 Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Book on British Columbia. We are proud to say that Kwädąy Dän Ts'ìnchį: Teachings from Long Ago Person Found, edited by Richard Hebda, Sheila Greer and Al Mackie, was shortlisted for this prize along with Unbuilt Environments by Jonathan Peyton (UBC Press) and the winning title—A Secwépemc People, Land, and Laws: Yerí7 re Stsq’ey’s-kucw (McGill-Queen’s University Press) by Dr. Marianne Ignace and Chief Ronald E. Ignace.

February 27: The Bulkley Valley Research Centre presented the volume editors of Kwädąy Dän Ts'ìnchį: Teachings from Long Ago Person Found with the Jim Pojar Award. This award recognizes an outstanding publication that contributes to the understanding or sustainability of natural and cultural resources in northwest BC.

February 14: The long list for the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness was announced and we were honoured to learn that The Language of Family had been independently nominated for this prize. The winning title was announced on March 6—Fighting for Space (Arsenal Pulp Press) by Travis Lupick.  

Congratulations to all those involved in both The Language of Family and Kwädąy Dän Ts'ìnchį.
